A reduction can be the right call. Make it after a diagnosis, so it buys attention and not only a lower number. Why yachts stop selling

None of these numbers promises a sale. They show the scale on which the decision is made.

How the numbers work.

Running costs

Crew, berth, insurance, maintenance and management, as a share of the asking price. About 10% a year is the figure most often quoted for yachts with permanent crew. Smaller yachts without crew often sit lower, older yachts higher.

Loss of value

Every month on the market she gets a little older and newer yachts arrive. Five per cent a year is a cautious starting point. Your broker knows what comparable yachts sold for.

What is left out

Fuel and charter income, because both depend on use. The price reduction is shown on its own. A year has 365 days, a day 24 hours, a month a twelfth of the year.

Owners ask the same things.

How much does it cost to keep a yacht for a year?

The rule of thumb most often quoted is about 10% of the purchase price a year for crew, berth, insurance, maintenance and management. For a yacht at €6.5 million that is about €650,000 a year, or roughly €1,780 a day, before fuel and before any loss of value.

Does an unsold yacht cost less because nobody uses her?

Only a little. Fuel and provisions fall away. Crew, berth, insurance and maintenance continue, and a yacht for sale has to stay ready for viewings.

Is it cheaper to reduce the price?

Sometimes. The calculator shows how many days of waiting a reduction is worth. A reduction works when buyers notice it and see why she is now worth a viewing. Without new material and a clear argument it often reads as pressure.

Who pays for a relaunch?

Either the brokerage or the owner. When the owner pays, scope and approval are agreed in writing with the brokerage before work starts.
